SurfControl on Wednesday announced an upgrade to its e-mail security filter software that adds reputation services and new compliance
features, while also easing policy management.
SurfControl E-mail Filter 6.0, available now, includes the company’s own reputation service – previously only available as
part of SurfControl’s hosted e-mail security service -- that automatically drops connection requests from IP addresses with
a history of sending spam, according to Dave Tripier, senior vice president of product management for SurfControl. By automatically
dropping these messages, corporations can significantly save on the bandwidth and storage required by inbound messages before
they hits spam filters, he says.

The new compliance features in E-mail Filter 6.0 include additional dictionaries that match words and phrases associated with
regulations such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, as well as personal
identifiers such as Social Security and credit card numbers.
The enhanced policy-management features allow administrators to set up a new policy in about 5 seconds, says Tripier. Also
included in Version 6.0 is an antivirus scanning engine and zero-hour virus protection at no additional charge.
E-mail Filter 6.0 is priced per user. An organization with 200 users would pay $3,000.
In April Websense announced plans to acquire SurfControl for $400 million.
